Despite flaws, an unforgettable experience
Positive: the location of the hotel in beautiful Alfriston is perfect, it is a beautiful historic building, there is plenty of parking and the staff are very friendly.
Less positive: that the hotel is in need of urgent renovation/reconstruction is an understatement.
You immediately notice that in recent months (perhaps due to the takeover) only basic maintenance has been carried out: windows have no longer been thoroughly cleaned, paint is falling off the doors and walls everywhere, sticking cupboard doors, sagging seats in the bar, dusty tables, etc. .
But the interior is also rather old-fashioned and out of date (especially the 90s curtains).
What we found worst, however, was the noise of the rooms (we had room 24, a superior double room): doors that close loudly, so far, but you really hear everything that happens in the adjacent rooms.
However, this is absolutely not a cheap hotel, too expensive for the comfort offered.
Nevertheless, we had 4 wonderful nights here and, above all, an unforgettable New Year's Eve, with good food, live music and, above all, the pleasant company of the other hotel guests and the bar staff.

Nice hotel and restaurant but the showers are a problem
It does mention this in the information folder in your room. However, I would not have booked the hotel if I'd have known. I also did not fancy changing rooms in an attempt to find a working shower.

Bad and unsympathetic customer service.
We booked again this year, again as part of a large group.
Unfortunately, my father was taken into hospital seriously ill the day before we were due to go. Additionally, my brother was taken into hospital with kidney stones.
Because of this we were unable to go the hotel. Admittedly it was very last minute, but in view of the extreme circumstances, our previous custom and also the many people we had recommended to the hotel, I thought that the management would grant us at least a partial refund.
However, the staff were completely unsympathetic and refused to give us any compensation at all.
I am very disappointed at this total lack of customer service.

As you quite rightly say, your partner contacted the hotel at very late notice. The terms of the booking for the New Year package were very clear and your partner was in agreement that she knew the booking was non-refundable. We were however happy to not charge for the additional third night which was added separately to extend your booking. We agreed that if we were able to resell the 2 night package to another couple then we would be able to refund you, however due to the extremely late nature of the cancellation, we no longer had an active waiting list as all possible guests had already found alternative venues for their New Year’s Eve celebrations.
We are unable to amend cancellation terms in the manner you are suggesting, as it would be entirely unprofessional and unfair to other bookings.
As discussed on the phone, I would always recommend adequate travel insurance is taken out for any high value non-refundable booking.
